The number of households with pet dogs and cats in India accounted for approximately 17 million and 1.5 million respectively in 2018. The increase in the number of households getting pets had led to a two fold increase in value of pet food sales to about 285 million U.S. dollars in 2018, up from139 million U.S dollars in 2014.

The survey results show that the share of respondents who are embarrassed to ask for a doggy bag decreased by roughly eight percent between 2014 and 2019. In 2014, more than half of respondents indicated that they were embarrassed to ask for a doggy bag at a restaurant, whereas by 2019 that figure had fallen just below 42.5 percent.

Most popular cat breeds 

The Ragdoll cat breed came first in the popularity ranking measured by number of purchased animals in Sweden in 2018. In this year, nearly 2.2 thousand animals of this breed were bought. The Siberian cat ranked second with a number of around 1.5 thousand purchased cats, ahead of the Maine Coon cat and the Norwegian Forest cat.

 Pet dogs 

In Sweden in 2010, there were 749 thousand pet dogs. This number increased by more than 100 in 2018 and peaked at 880 animals. As of this year, the Labrador Retriever was the most purchased dog breed in the country, reaching almost 2.7 thousand animals. It was followed by approximately 1.9 thousand purchased German Shepherd dogs as well as Golden Retriever dogs.

The Dutch are pet-loving people. In 2018, nearly 20 percent of Dutch households owned a pet dog. Cats were even more popular. That year, out of every four households in the Netherlands, one had a pet cat. In neighboring country Belgium too, cats were more popular than dogs. Here 24 percent of the households had a pet dog, vs. 27 percent owning a cat.

 Pet dog and pet cat population 

  Between 2010 and 2018, the pet dog population in the Netherlands slightly increased. At its peak in 2014, there were over 2.5 million pet dogs in the country. By 2018, the Dutch pet dog population reached just over 1.5 million. Although impressive in size, the number of dogs in the Netherlands was significantly smaller than the number of cats. In 2018, there were over 2.6 million pet cats living in the Netherlands. The cat population too reached its peak in 2014, at nearly 3.7 million animals.

Popularity of pets

  A 2016 survey found that over half of the Dutch households had at least one pet. Cats and dogs were the most popular pets, but a smaller share of households also had fish. According to this survey, roughly one in ten households kept pet fish.

In selected years from 2010 to 2018, the share of Danes owning cats and dogs generally increased. Noticeable is, that from 2010 to 2014, more people were dog owners (around 21 percent) than cat owners (around 18 percent). This changed in the following years to 27 percent having cats and approximately 23 percent having dogs. By comparison, in the neighboring country Sweden, there were always more households with cats than dogs in the same years.

   In numbers, the cat population decreased slightly from 673 thousand in 2010 to 675 thousand animals in 2018. However, the dog population grew in the same period from 580 thousand to 595 thousand.

   The number of cats as well as the number of dogs increased in recent years. As of 2018, the cat population was measured at approximately 1.44 million animals and the dog population at 880 thousand animals.

The distribution of pet cat and dog ownership in Russia showed similar dynamics during the period under consideration. Over one third of Russian households owned at least one cat on average, while the share of families having a pet dog was measured at 28 percent in 2018, after gaining a ten percent share since 2012.  

Russia – the country of cats

As of 2018, the volume of domestic cats across Russia outnumbered the population of pet dogs in the country by roughly five million. However, while half the domestic dogs were pedigree, the majority of cats owned by Russian households were outbred – making them the most widespread type of domestic animal in the country. This fact can be explained by the social affinity to pick up small domestic friends in the streets.

Cats and dogs worldwide

From a global perspective, the count of pet dogs was greater than that of cats as of 2018. Germany was the leading country in the European Union by number of domestic cats and dogs over that year. Nonetheless, the German pet cat population was roughly two times lower compared to the volume of domestic cats in Russia in 2018.

From 2010 to 2018, the share of cats in Norwegian households was just over 30 percent. By comparison, over this period, roughly 20 percent for households owned at least one dog. Cats seemed to be a very popular pet in Norway; the number increased in recent years and peaked in 2018 at 770 thousand animals.  

 Pet cats in Sweden

   In Norway’s neighboring country Sweden, the situation was similar. Since 2012, the share of households owning at least one cat remained stable at 17 percent, while 13 percent of Swedish households owned a dog. In 2018, it increased to 15 percent of dog owners and 20 percent of cat owners. In this country too, cats were more common to have as a pet than dogs. As of 2018, there were around1.4 million pet cats registered in Sweden.

Pet cats in Denmark

  The population of pet cats in Denmark in 2018 was measured at a number of 675 thousand animals. As in Norway and Sweden, more households had cats than dogs as a pet in this year. It is striking that the situation was different before. From 2010 to 2014, the share of households owning at least one dog grew to 23 percent, while it was 18 percent for pet cats.
